I’m Jaylee James, a writer, editor, blogger, and overall geek from Kansas City.
Writing & Editing
I have been writing for as long as I could hold a pen. I spent truly outrageous amounts of time writing elaborate fantasy epics in elementary school and posting them on a long-dead website called Kids-Space. In sixth grade (year 2000 to you) I had several pieces featured in the Neopian Times, and thus began my writing career! I wrote a lot of epic fantasy and angsty poetry in high school (as one does), and eventually studied (but did not major in) English literature and writing in college.
From July 2014 – Feb 2016, I was the founder and senior editor of Vitality Magazine, a LGBTQ+ literary magazine seeking to fulfill a need for positive genre fiction featuring queer characters. I myself identify as polyamorous, demi-bisexual, and bigender, and this project was very close to my heart. At the time of its creation, Vitality was wholly unique – a market for short genre fiction featuring queer characters. Unfortunately the magazine closed in 2016, but all the issues are still available on Amazon.
From there, I went on to write and edit numerous projects, including Murder-You-Vote, a slasher fic with community interactivity, in the spring of 2016. I then edited an anthology of science fiction fairy tales called Circuits & Slippers, which came out in the fall of 2016.
Both projects went on indefinite hiatus in late 2017 when I took a job with Pixelberry Studios, writing for their game Choices. I wrote for ‘High School Story,’ but most of my contributions were on the book ‘Perfect Match.’ (Yes, I’m the Jaylee who made Damien Nazario!)
My most recent project was released at the end of 2018 – Love & Bubbles, an anthology of queer love stories set underwater.
Where will I go from here? Would it be tacky to plug my newsletter and suggest subscribing for more updates? 😉
When I’m not writing and editing, I play video games, obsessively scroll twitter, and read lots of books across multiple genres. I have a youtube channel where I discuss books and attempt to do makeup (badly).
I’m married to my high school sweetheart, a teddy bear with a marshmallow heart named Chris. But we date other people, too.
I have two teacup pomeranians named Bubbles and Taffy, who share my deep and abiding love of food. They are the absolute loves of my life and at least once a week I gripe at myself for falling in love with creatures that have such a limited lifespan. And who continuously pee on the carpet. And who steal my food off of my plate if I turn my back for even a second. …. But they’re so cute, you guys…
Jaylee James is a pen name. My real name is Gaven. My legal name is a mystery spoken of only in legend and myth (and by my grandparents, but y’know). My pronouns are (for now) he/him.
