Appearances at MidAmeriCon!

I will be speaking at several events at MidAmeriCon this year in my hometown of Kansas City. I’d love for you guys to stop by and say hi (especially on Wednesday morning, when I’m doing a reading of my work… I’d prefer not to read to an empty room!).

My schedule is as follows:

Reading: Jaylee James

Wednesday 14:00 – 14:30, 2202 (Readings)

We Deserve Better: Lesbians and Bi Women for Change

Friday 15:00 – 16:00, 2209

TV SPOILERS! TW: Character Deaths.
In March 2016 The 100 killed one member of an interracial female couple. Fans launched a Twitter campaign ( that became mainstream news. They objected to the “Bury Your Gays” trope, referring to the disproportionately high number of lesbians and bisexual women killed on TV (143+). Two weeks later, one of The Walking Dead‘s only lesbian couple was killed. We discuss this disturbing pattern and ask how audiences can help prevent it.

Complexity of Character: Coming Out in Teen Spec Fic

Saturday 10:00 – 11:00, 3501B

Young adult speculative fiction is doing a fairly good job of featuring a diverse and varied cast of characters, but books that feature LGBT, asexual, and nonbinary characters are still not always easy to find. Let’s talk about what books and characters are out there, and what themes and identities are still underrepresented in YA SF? What challenges do spec fic authors face when writing and publishing books about teen sexuality and love? Beyond the main characters, what roles do the secondary and tertiary characters play in helping to advance the conversation about teen sexuality?

The Shipping Forecast

Saturday 11:00 – 12:00, 3501B

The Hunger Games, Insurgent, The 100, The Walking Dead, and countless other TV shows, films, novels, and comics are set at the end of the world or in a post-apocalyptic environment. Many of these have huge and enthusiastic fan bases that often all but ignore the apocalypse in favor of shipping multiple characters. Conversely, one of the most popular AU settings for fanfic in non-apocalyptic fandoms is post-apocalyptic verses. We discuss the delights of the apocalypse (and post-apocalypse), questioning its appeal as a setting among shippers.

*The nature of this session may result in adult themes being discussed.*
